Demolition Underway For The Gateway Tower in Greektown
We’re seeing the first signs of progress on The Gateway, a new residential tower going in at the corner of West Madison Street and South Halsted Street.
Demolition crews are chewing through the rubble of an unremarkable two-story bank, clearing the L-shaped plot for the 312-foot-tall building. The project also includes a supermarket, and will eliminate a surface parking lot as it wraps around the more substantial building currently at 2 South Halsted Street, formerly the Mid-City Trust and Savings Bank Building.
Because of the site preparation work, we’ve changed the pin from blue to yellow in the Incomplete, Interactive Map of Chicago Projects:

For a second I was worried. I looked at the streetview of Madison and Halsted, saw the gorgeous arches and profile medallions of that bank building and was surprised that you called that “unremarkable”. Then as I did more reading and more Streetviewing, I see that you were referring to the building behind that on Grace street and that the taller building on the corner would stay.
No need to worry — Stinky as it is, the Mid-City Bank building remains. The bank behind it was just a low 70′s-style drive-through. I doubt it will be missed, even among MCM fans.
You seem to be missing some on the map… like K2 development on Kinzie (under construction), Hines development in Old Town (under construction), 360 W Hubbard proposal, 171 N Wabash RMK proposal, 17-story Student Life Center at 825 S. Wabash, also the Coast is under construction, as is AMLI, the West Loop Target, Viceroy Hotel conversion, and it’d be nice to see developments like the Pete’s Fresh at Madison/Western added. Thanks!
We’re missing TONS of items from that map. That’s why I call it “Incomplete.” It’s also why I put out the call for anyone else interested in helping with the map to let me know. My little digits can only type so fast, and there’s so much going on in Chicago these days. If you have a GMail address, I can give you access to add items to the map. Let me know.
I made all of the changes you suggested. If you think of any more, just shoot an e-mail to editor@ChicagoArchitecture.info
How do residents feel about the Gateway project?
I haven’t heard too much for or against this project. Those who are against it bring up the usual concerns — traffic, parking, noise, views. Those who are for it welcome density, more retail opportunities, and the elimination of three underutilized lots.
This project is supposed to have a Mariano’s Fresh market in it. People who are against the project question whether that’s a good idea right across the street from Dominick’s. But after what I saw of the Mariano’s that just opened in Lakeshore East (see our review here), it would be great for the area. I don’t think people realized how grubby and overpriced that Dominick’s is until the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market opened at Presidential Towers. I think a Mariano’s on Halsted will have people running back across the highway again.
