- Globe Street reports that the office tower portion of Block37, known as 22 West Washington, has been bought by Prudential Real Estate Investors in New Jersey for $183.5 million.
- A web site called Out of the Storm News muses about Chicago’s skyline, and posits that Chicago, not Columbus or Hartford, may be the capitol of America’s insurance industry.
- Demolition over at Fourth Presbyterian Church (125 East Chestnut Street) has unveiled the west facade for the first time in 50 years. Check out the gargoyles and other details on the church’s Facebook album.
I’ve long loved both the Fourth Presbyterian Church and the St. James Chapel of the former Quigley Prep Seminary at Rush and Pearson as buildings that lend both elegance and uplift to the highrises around them. Fourth Pres is in line with the lower street profile that used to be the norm on Mag Mile, something built on a more human scale.
As for Out of the storm News and their musings about the insurance industry in Chicago, they’re really late to the party: the Insurance Exchange Building at 175 W. Jackson Blvd. right across from CBOT, built in 1912, was during the early part of this century home to more insurance companies than any other building in the country.
